One could argue that someone goes into business for the money. Some do it for fame and others do it out of boredom. I started my business because I had a passion for helping people and I believed I could make a living out of it—and quite frankly, doing what you love is quite rare these days, so I do feel lucky in that sense.
And you know what else is rare and you’d be lucky to have it? Software that works perfectly, is made by the same company and that never breaks down or goes haywire when you least expect it. Yeah, I’ve never met anyone that lucky either.
When software is made by different companies and at different times, all sorts of issues arise, some more nightmarish than the others—and today I’d like to share some thoughts about the most basic of functions your software needs to have: Interoperability.
The textbook definition of interoperability describes it as “the ability of different information technology systems and software applications to communicate, exchange data, and use the information that has been exchanged.” So as you see, there are three key ingredients to interoperability: communication, exchange and usage of data.
But the reality is that most software applications, especially in healthcare, hospitality and insurance are not designed with interoperability in mind. Sure, it’s a desirable trait, but in most cases this doesn’t happen. Communication is done using different formats and protocols, the exchange is basic at best and proper use of the resulted data—well, you can ask your colleagues and support staff how easy that is.
But let’s get to the point: In more cases than not, data exchange is a mess and solving this issue takes a lot of time and especially a lot of money. And quite frankly, the more time and money your pour into it, the harder the toll on your health (and of course, on your staff’s health).
